BAD BEAT ON CANCER
During the 2003 World Series of Poker, poker players Phil Gordon and Rafe Furst started a drive to help fund cancer prevention research and education ? by playing poker. They asked their friends to pledge just one percent of their winnings at the WSOP Championship Event to the Prevent Cancer Foundation as a tax-deductible donation. The idea caught on, and before they knew it, over 80 players helped to raise enough money to fund a research grant for an entire year.
Since that first event, the Bad Beat on Cancer initiative has grown to include other major poker tournaments, home games, leagues, and has inspired some players to pledge for life. Thousands of amateurs and pros alike have participated in Bad Beat on Cancer, including stars Eric Seidel, Phil Hellmuth, Jr., Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson, Paul Wasicka, and others.
In 2006, Phil Gordon issued a challenge to poker players and friends: raise $1 million between the 2006 and 2007 World Series of Poker events to support the work of the Foundation. In that one year, the I'll Raise You a Million Challenge was surpassed, thanks to the generosity of thousands of donors and players who anted up to prevent cancer at tournaments as local as the office league and as big-time as the World Series of Poker Main Event.
Since its inception, Bad Beat on Cancer has raised over $2.5 million!
But our work is not done! This year, 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with cancer, over 1/3 of those could have been prevented. We need your help to reach the future we envision, one where cancer incidence and mortality will be significantly reduced through preventive measures.
The Prevent Cancer Foundation is a national, non-profit health foundation whose mission is the prevention and early detection of cancer through research, education and community outreach to all populations, including children and the underserved. www.preventcancer.org
